Kanakanahalli Ramachandra Biography

Kanakanahalli Ramachandra was an Indian mathematician from Mysore, best known as a theoretician. He worked on both analytic and algebraic theory of numbers. K. G. Ramanathan was his advisor during his doctoral studies. T. N. Shorey, Ramachandran Balasubramanian and Atiyolil Venugopalan are among his prominent students. He worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research for long three decades since 1965. During his lifetime, he published over 200 articles, of which over 170 have been catalogued by Mathematical Reviews. In 1978 he founded the Hardy–Ramanujan journal, and was associated with it as a publisher till his death in 2011.

 

Kanakanahalli Ramachandra, shortly called K. Ramachandra was born in Mandya, Mysore Princely State of British India on August 18, 1933. He lost his father at the age of 13, and after that he took a job due to financial issues. Ramachandra worked as a clerk at the Minerva Mills where his father worked. Yet he never left behind his interest in the subject of mathematics, and continued with its learnings. Ramachandra studied number theory all by himself in his free time. He was very much interested in Ramanujan theories.

 

His higher education was completed at Central College, Bangalore and then he took up a lecturer job at BMS College of Engineering. Later he taught for a brief period at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, before he moved to Mumbai for higher studies. He completed graduation from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and also Ph.D. from University of Mumbai in 1965. After that he joined from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (where he did his studies) and worked as a faculty for exactly three decades till his retirement.
