Kamlashankar Trivedi Biography

Kamlashankar Trivedi was a Sanskrit teacher and scholar. He was a Gujarati language editor too, who lived in the second half of 19th century and early 20th century. He served as an examiner of Sanskrit in University of Bombay and Panjab University. He also served as the seventh session of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1924, just one year before his death. Apart from working as a Sanskrit teacher, he translated several Sanskrit works to Gujarati language and edited a few works as well. A few of his books were published posthumously. Hindustan no Sankshipta Itihas – is his short history on India, published in 1920.

 

His full name is Kamlashankar Pranshankar Trivedi. He was born on 11 October 1857 in Surat. He spent his early years in Surat where he completed his school education, and passed his matriculation in 1874. He completed graduation in History and Economics from Alphenston College in 1878. Later he taught at various schools at Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Pune and many other places, due to his financial crises. He taught primary and secondary level. Later he served as Principal at Premchand Raichand Training College in Ahmedabad in 1902, and as an examiner at Sanskrit in University of Bombay and Panjab University. He retired from teaching in 1914.

 

He taught Sanskrit at various educational institutions, though he learnt History and Economics. A Sanskrit scholar par excellence, he edited and authored many books. He also edited academic text books. Shankar Jayanti Vyakhyanmala, Gods of India, Gujarati Bhashanu Vyakaran, Karakmimansa, England no Tunko Itihas, Shiksahnshastrana Mooltatvo, Madhyam Vyakaran and Gujarati grammar, Brihad Vyakaran. Two of his books - Kavyasahitya Mimansa (1930) and Anubhavvinod (1933) were published posthumously. He passed away in 1925.
