Kamaleshwar Mukherjee Biography

Kamaleshwar Mukherjee is a well accomplished director of Bengali cinema, known for making several highly praised movies. Meghe Dhaka Tara and Chander Pahar are among his best movies, both released in 2013. Meghe Dhaka Tara – screened in the International Film Festival of Kerala, 2013 received Silver Crow Pheasant Award for the Best Director and NETPAC Award. The movie also bagged Centenary Award at International Film Festival of India, Goa 2013. Chander Pahar earned him several nominations including Filmfare best director award, apart from Kalakar Awards for Best Director in 2013.

He belongs to Kolkata and is a physician by profession, though he joined entertainment industry later. He took MBBS from Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. He was into ad making field at first, before plunging into the world of Bengali cinema in the year 2010, when he started off as a dialogue writer for the movie - Natobor Notout. In made his directorial debut in 2011, with an experimental film - Uro Chithi, describing life in 12 shades of life. He is known for his unique style of film making and often stays away from normal commercial masala movies.

In 2013, he made his celebrated movie, Meghe Dhaka Tara which was highly praised at International Film Festival of Kerala 2013, winning him the prestigious Silver Crow Pheasant Award for the Best Director and NETPAC Award. The film is inspired from the life and works of Bengali film director Ritwik Ghatak, which includes his phase in mental asylum. As a director of experiments, he shot the entire film in Black and White except the last scene in colour – perhaps never witnessed in Indian cinema. Saswata Chatterjee and Ananya Chatterjee played lead roles and the movie was termed ‘Classic’ by critics. It was followed by Chander Pahar and 13 Number Tarachand Lane. He has also appeared in cameo roles in between; Mishawr Rawhoshyo, Obhishopto Nighty, Khaad, Force and Arshinagar to name a few.
