Kamalapati Tripathi Biography

Kamalapati Tripathi was a senior politician from Benares who served as the 7th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh during 4 April 1971 – 13 June 1973. A former parliamentarian, he has also served Union Minister for Railways. He remained a very influential politician in state politics, affiliated to Indian National Congress. He was also associated with Indian independence movement during his younger days. He died on 8 October 1990 in Varanasi, aged 85. Apart from his active career in politics, he was also a journalist and writer.

 

He was born on 3 September 1905 in Benares, Benares State in British India. His ancestors settled down in Varanasi during the time of Aurangzeb. He was born to Pandit Narayan Pati Tripathi. He got married at the age of 19 and had 3 sons and two daughters. His eldest son Lokpati Tripathi, followed his footsteps and earned fame in state politics. He also served as an MLA in Uttar Pradesh state assembly and also remained a minister in Uttar Pradesh. His second son was Mayapati Tripathi is also associated with social work, and founded the NGO, Akhil Bharatiya Kissan Mazdoor Vahini.

 

Kamalapati Tripathi started his professional career as a journalist, beginning with Hindi daily, Aaj. Later he worked in Sansaar. He also remained an editor for a few publications. His association with freedom struggle movement began in the early 1920s, when he participated in Non-cooperation Movement. For his participation in Civil Disobedience Movement, and also Quit India Movement, he got jailed. After Indian independence, he rose to prominence in state politics.

 

He became CM of Uttar Pradesh in 1971, and remained in chair for two years. Following 1973 Provincial Armed Constabulary revolt, he was forced to resign. After that he got associated with national level politics. Union Minister for Railways for two times first from 1975 to 1977, and also in 1980, and goyt opportunity to present railway budget 4 times during his term.
