Kamal Nath Biography

Kamal Nath is an Indian politician and the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, a central Indian state. He is associated with Indian National Congress and has served as a cabinet minister three times. He served as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Environment and Forests (1991-1995), Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Textiles (1995-1996) and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry (2004-2009). Got elected to Lok Sabha in 2014 from Chhindwara constituency of Madhya Pradesh, he currently serves as the pro tem Speaker of the current Lok Sabha.

 

Kamal Nath was born on 18 November 1946 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He got actively involved with politics since late 1970s and got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980. Since then he has elected to Lok Sabha in 1985, 1989, 1991, and got inducted to cabinet for the first time in 1991. He served as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Environment and Forests in Narasimha Rao’s cabinet. Since 1990s, he has been a prominent figure of Indian National Congress in the national level.

 

Later he was elected to Lok Sabha in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. He has been elected to parliament 9 times till now. He served as the General Secretary during 2001-2004. Though Nath was confirmed to the ministry of parliamentary affairs in 2012, he replaced Pranab Mukherjee to help the UPA government win a crucial debate on FDI retail. He was a classmate of Sanjay Gandhi at school and shares a good relation with Nehru family. He currently serves as Chairman of "Madhya Pradesh Child Development Council".

 

Yet he is not free of controversies. He was alleged involvement in the Sikh Genocide in 1984. Radio tapes and rice export accusations are other major controversies. In 2002, Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 10,00,000 on Kamal Nath for damaging the environment caused by the construction of his motel on the banks of Beas in Manali.

 

On 13th December 2018, Kamal Nath was elected as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.
