Kalyan Mukherjea Biography

Kalyan Mukherjea was a Sarod player, musician and mathematician from Bengal, who lived during the period, 1943–2010. He was also known as a composer, and a renowned artist of his times. He also owned numerous students like Arnab Chakrabarty. In 1995 during his peak years of his career, he suffered a paralytic stroke, and lost mobility of the left side of his body after which his musical journey came to a sudden end. After that he lived a normal life till the last phase of his life journey. Sarod maestro Radhika Mohan Maitra was his guru.

 

Kalyan Mukherjea was born in 1943 in Kolkata during British rule. His father, A K Mukherjea, was a successful barrister and scholar of Indian philosophy, who later served as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Sarod maestro Radhika Mohan Maitra was his close friend, who trained young Kalyan Mukherjea. Later he became a student of D T Joshi, well-known sitar player, vocalist and composer. After starting his career as a performer, he continued learning under different gurus, except a couple of breaks in the 1960s and 1970s, when he was mostly associated with the field of mathematics as a researcher and faculty.

 

Kalyan has also contributed as a mathematician, along with his career as a musician. He completed his Mathematics studies from Cambridge University, followed by a doctorate. In 1968 he began his professional career as a lecturer of mathematics in 1968 with UCLA, where he was associated for next 8 years. While at UCLA, Mukherjea served as an instructor of Hindustani instrumental music in music department.Then he returned to India and worked as a professor at Indian Statistical Institutes in Delhi and Kolkata. Topology was his prime interest.
