Kalpana (kannada Actress) Biography

Kalpana was a Kannada actress of black and white era. She has also acted in other south Indian languages except Malayalam. Though she has been one of the top actresses of 1970’s, she committed suicide at the age of 36 following her failed relationship with great Kannada director, Puttanna Kanagal with whom she has done the most memorable movies of her career. Her career too was at the verge of a downfall. She debut big screen in the year 1963 with the movie, Saaku Magalu directed by B.R. Pantulu. She received Karnataka state award for best actress for the movie, Sharapanjara of 1971. This multi award winning movie was directed by Puttanna Kanagal. This challenging role won her the largest fan following ever for a Kannada actress.

 

Kalpana was born on 8 July 1943 in a Tulu speaking family in Karnataka. Her real name was Sharat Lata. Since young she was fascinated to acting and hence used to actively participate in talent competitions since school level. In 1963, she debut big screen with Saaku Magalu opposite Rajkumar. She has been successfully paired opposite Rajkumar in numerous movies later. In 1967, she got the big break as Belli Moda which brought her to front. Thus she became the leading actress of the industry in the second half of the decade. She continued her successful journey through 1970’s as well.

 

Eradu Kanasu, Sharapanjara, Gejje Pooje, Bayalu Daari, Belli Moda, Kappu Bilupu, Gandhada Gudi and Bangarada Hoovu are regarded as her finest performances. She also got opportunity to work with all leading actors and film makers of her time. She was most favoured by director, Puttanna Kanagal and together they have done many noted movies. They were also romantically linked by the media. But they fell apart due to misunderstandings and Kanagal later groomed other heroines. Kalpana’s career noticed a fall and it resulted in her unfortunate suicide too. She played lead role in Madras To Pondicherry, which was later remade to Hindi as Bombay to Goa, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aruna Irani, the first heroine of Big B!
