He played lead role in Ritwak Ghatak’s Ajantrik and pivot roles in Parash Pathar (1958), Nagarik (1952), the most memorable roles he played during his career. Other noted roles include - Neel Akasher Neeche, Badshah, Parash Pathar, Arohi, Dakharkara, Sonar Harin, Surjo Toron, Dadar Kirti, Guru Dakhina, Notun Fasal, Manihara etc.

This legend of realistic cinema was active in the film scene since late 1940s to early 2000s, thus spending more than 6 decades in the industry. He was one of the best choices of directors of realistic films in the 50s, 60s and 70s and beautifully represented rural characters in Bengali films during this period. When popular actors like Uttam Kumar, Anil Chatterji, Bikash Roy and Bosonto Choudhury represented urbanized youth of 1950s-1970s, Kali represented the common mass through his roles.

He was born in Kolkata in 1921. He started off his film journey in the late 1940s with supporting roles. He was associated with commercial movies till he was rediscovered by directors of realistic cinema Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak in the 1950s. Tapan Sinha and Agragami also gave him similar kind of roles. He portrayed the challenging role of a postmaster in Dakharkara directed by Agragami. “Ogo tomar shesh bicharer ashay” sung by Manna Dey was pictured on him.

Satyajit Ray experimented with Kali Banerjee in the films Manihara, Parash Pathar etc. He played the title role of a taxi driver in Ritwak Ghatak’s Ajantrik. He played the title role of Chinese in Mrinal Sen’s Neel Akasher Neeche, which was the first film to be banned by the Government of India for its political overtones.
