K. Vijayan Biography

K. Vijayan was a film director who predominantly worked in Tamil cinema. He has also directed a few Malayalam and Hindi films. As a film director he is best known for his Tamil blockbuster Thirisoolam released in 1979. The film starred the legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan in a triple role and is credited as his last blockbuster which ran more than 200 days at theatre. He has remade many hit south and Bollywood films to other Indian languages. Amardeep starring Rajesh Khanna is one such remake, whose original film was a Malayalam version titled Theekanal, and was also made by him into Tamil with the same title.  

 

K. Vijayan was born as K. Sathyanathan on 7 December 1939 in Tirur, Kerala. During his professional years in film industry, he settled in Chennai. He worked at Trichy Golden Rock Railways before pursuing a career in films. He moved to Chennai to pursue his career as an actor, and got his first break as a lead hero for the movie, Paadhai Theriyudhu Paar. Despite critical acclaim, the film did not succeed commercially. But it received National award for best feature film in Tamil for the year 1960. The film was based on communist ideologies.

 

He turned a director in the late 1960s, and directed Shivaji Ganesan in a series of movies of 1970s and early 1980s, and also gave him some of the super hit films. Kaaval Dheivam starring Shivaji Ganesan was his debut film as a director and it was a moderate hit. He was fully active in the industry till he passed away in 1988. En Rathathin Rathame (remake of Mr. India) and Aval Potta Kolam were released posthumously.
