K. S. Narasimhaswamy Biography

K. S. Narasimhaswamy was a prominent poet from Kannada language. His masterpiece work is collection of poems - Mysooru Mallige (1942) has seen more than thirty two reprints. He has been awarded with numerous honours including Academy award and National award for best lyrics for Mysooru Mallige in the year 1991. Apart from huge poetry collection, he has also done a few prose works as well as translations. His translation works include - Media (1966), Robert Burns Kaviya kelavu Premageetegalu (1997) and Kelavu Chinee Kavanagalu (1997). His prose works are Maariya Kallu (1942), Upavana (1958), Damayanthi (1960) and Sirimallige (1990). He has been a poet inspired by satire and folklore.

 

Narasimhaswamy was born in Kikkeri of Karnataka on 26 January 1915. His early education was at Mysore and college education at Bangalore. He married Venkamma in Tiptur in 1936. She has inspired him a lot in his poetic works later. His romantic love poems, inspired by Robert Burns were unique when got published at a time when Kannada works most concentrated on nature and natural world. He has been a part of the Navodaya movement in Kannada literature. Film director T.S. Nagabharana made a movie based on his work, Mysooru Mallige for which Narasimhaswamy won National award for best lyricist as well.

 

Pampa Award for his poetry collection Dundu Mallige in 1997 and Sahitya Academy award for Tereda Baagilu in 1978 are the important honours received by this great Kannada writer.  He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University and an Honorary Fellowship by the Sahitya Academy also. A few of his published collection of poems include – Ungura, Mounadali Maatha Hudukutha, Tereda Baagilu, Maneyinda Manege, Tereda Baagilu, Deepa Saalina Naduve, Haadu-Hase, Navila Dani, Deepada Malli, Airaavatha and Sanje Haadu.
