K. S. Chithra Biography
K. S. Chithra is an Indian playback singer who sings classical, devotional and film songs. She has sung the songs in many languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, etc. She has received six National Film Awards, more than 30 state awards and 5 Filmfare Awards South.
Chithra was born on 27th July 1963 in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala in a music family. Her father’s name is Krishnan Nair. He found out the talents of his daughter and started nurturing it when she was young. She got her music training from Dr. K. Omanakutty and got masters degree in music from the University of Kerala. She married Vijayashankar, an engineer. She had only one daughter named Nandana and she died at her age of 8 in an accident in April 2011 in Dubai.
M.G. Radhakrishnan introduced her to the Malayalam film industry. Then on she started to sing regularly for films. She has performed many live concerts with K. J. Yesudas and some of her initial films include Attahasam, Snehapurvam Meera and Njaan Ekananu. She became very famous after the song, Chinna Kuyil Paadum in the film Poove Poochudava.
She has worked with veteran composers like Ilayaraja, M. S. Viswanathan, K. V. Mahadevan, Deva, M. G. Sreekumar, Mani Sharma, Harris Jayaraj, A. R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan, etc.
She launched the fund raising organization Sneha Nandana to raise funds for the welfare of the aged musicians. To celebrate the 30th year of her career, the cultural event known as Chitra Pournami was held at Thiruvananthapuram on 15th February 2011.
