K. Rani Biography

K. Rani is an Indian playback singer who concentrated in south Indian films. She predominantly worked in the era of 1950s when playback singing has just started in south Indian film scene. She has sung for all south Indian languages, apart from Hindi, Bengali, Sinhala and Uzbek languages. Rani is the first Indian female singer to do playback singing in Sinhala and Uzbek language films. She sang the National song of Sinhalam (Sri Lanka) too. She was facilitated by the title ‘Mallisai Vaani’ by none other than Kamaraj Nadar. She also got opportunity to sing before Dr. Radhakrishna, former President of India. Rani has also performed many stage shows.

 

Rani was born in 1943. She started singing at a very young age of eight. Telugu film Roopavathi (1951) marked her singing debut. Same year she sang for two Tamil films - Mohana Sundaram and Singari. Very soon she became the playback singer for leading heroines onscreen, before she reached 10 years old. For the 1953 bilingual film – Devadasu she sang two hit songs - Ellaam Maayai Thaanaa and Antha Bhranthi Yenaa for Tamil and Telugu movies respectively. In 1953, she made her debut in Sri Lankan films through the movie – Sujata, thus becoming the first female Indian playback singer to sing for Sinhala language.

 

One of the most sought singers of the 1950s, her career started declining in the 1960s with the arrival of new singers. She associated with Nagore E. M. Hanifa in the 1960s to record Tamil Islamic songs and songs for DMK party. Her duets with Ghantasala were quite popular in the 1950s. Batasari, Jayasimha, Dharmadevata, Devadasu and Lava Kusa were among her memorable movies. She has rendered her voice to more than 500 film songs belonging to different languages.
