K. L. V. Vasantha Biography

K. L. V. Vasantha was a singer-actress and dancer associated with early talkies of Tamil cinema. She was most active in the era of 1930s and 1940s, when she used to be a singer actress of Tamil films. She was an accomplished dancer and singer, who appeared in a few movies. Started off playing minor roles in the early 1930s, she moved to adult roles in the late 1930s and catapulted into stardom with the success of 1939 film, Rambaiyin Kaathal directed by B. N. Rao. She retired from film scene post-independence and returned to Chennai where she lived till her death in 2008. She was the female lead in the first film of Gemini Studios when it was started in 1941. The film was titled Madanakamarajan, directed by B. N. Rao.

 

K. L. V. Vasantha was born in 1923 in Kundrathur, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. Since young she was interested in singing and dancing. She was seen in a minor, uncredited role in Pavalakkodi (1934) when she was only 10 or 11 years old. She appeared in B. N. Rao's Rambaiyin Kaathal (1939) and its box office success gave her a big break to films. It was followed by Bhooloka Ramba (1940) which was also a major hit. She was fully active in the film industry till 1946 working as a singer-actress.

 

Some of her films include - Rambaiyin Kaathal, Sathyavaani, Madanakamarajan, Rajarajeswari, Sulochana, Burma Rani and Subathra. She played the lead heroine of the first movie produced by S. S. Vasan, when Gemini Studios was launched in 1941. She shared screen space with V. V. Satagopan, Kothamangalam Subbu andT. S. Durairaj for the movie, which told the adventurous tale of a prince.
