K. K. Venugopal Biography

K. K. Venugopal is a prominent constitutional lawyer and a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India, who serves as Attorney General of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since June 2017. He was appointed in the position at the age of 86 and he replaced Mukul Rohatgi. Government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Public Affairs and Law Making. Earlier he received Padma Bhushan from Government of India. His name has been linked with many high profile cases of Kerala, and he always remained in spotlight.

 

Kottayan Katankot Venugopal, commonly known as K. K. Venugopal hails from Kanhangad, Kasaragode, Kerala. The place belonged to Malabar region under British rule, when he was born in 1931. He grew up in Mangalore and completed his graduation from Chennai. Following his father’s path, Venugopal too chose the path of law and completed his law studies. His father, M. K. Nambiar, was a barrister. He is married and has three children.

 

In his professional career, he gradually rose to the position of eminent lawyer and constitutional expert, and currently serves as Attorney General of India at the age of 87. He was practising in Chennai when he was called to Delhi. Venugopal, who began his career in 1954 has over 60 years of experience and is highly regarded in judicial circle. In 1972, he got the status of Senior Advocate, and remained a Senior Advocate for 45 years. In 1977, he was the solicitor general in the Janata Party government in 1977. He has served as an advisor to the Royal Government of Bhutan for drafting the country’s constitution.
