K. K. Muhammed Biography

K. K. Muhammed is an Indian archaeologist, who is the former Regional Director (North) of the Archaeological Survey of India. He is currently serving as Project Archaeological Director in the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. He is a recipient of numerous honours and awards for his career. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian archaeology and research works, government of India announced Padma Shri on the occasion of 2019 Republic Day celebrations. He has served as the Superintending Archaeologist in Archaeological Survey of India at the head offices at Delhi (2008-2012), Bhopal (2004-2008), Chhattisgarh (2003-2004), Agra (2001-2003) and Patna (1997-2001).

 

Karingamannu Kuzhiyil Muhammed was born on 1 July 1952 into a middle class family in Kozhikode, Kerala. Beeran Kutty Haji and Mariyam are his parents. He schooled from Koduvally, Kerala. For higher studies he relocated to Aligarh, where he studied his Master’s at Aligarh Muslim University. He later joined School of Archaeology, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi and completed a 2-year diploma course in archaeology in 1977. After studies he joined Aligarh Muslim University, where he served as technical assistant and then as assistant archaeologist in the Department of History.

 

From there on he served some of the senior administrative posts of ASI at different locations. His association with Archaeological Survey of India began in 1988 when he was initially posted in Chennai. He was later transferred to Goa in 1991. He became a superintendent archaeologist in 1997, and served at different offices. He has been a part of several archaeological excavations and discoveries. His group excavated numerous rock cut caves, Umbrella Stones, Cists and Dolmens in Kozhikode and Malapuram districts of Kerala. The first Christian Chapel of North India built by Akbar at Fatehpur Sikri, Ibadat Khana of Akbar, Buddhist Stupa of Kesaria built by Emperor Ashoka etc are a few more.
