K. G. Subramanyan Biography

K. G. Subramanyan is one of the pioneers of Indian modern art at present. With an artistic career spanning over 65 years, he is still busy with his paint brush. His works include traditions of mural, various craft traditions of India, toy-making, pottery, illustration & design and terracotta sculpture. For his contributions to Indian art, he was honoured with Padma Shree in 1975 and Padma Vibhushan in 2012. Dishikottam, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan; D.Litt (Honoris Causa), Assam University, Silchar; D.Litt (Honoris Causa), Benaras Hindu University, Benaras and Fellowship of Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi in 1993 are other major honours received by him.

 

K G Subramanyan, popularly known as K. G was born in a village in north Kerala in 1924. He was keen in arts since early childhood. He studied Economics from Presidency College, Chennai. He actively participated in Indian freedom struggle movement during college days and a short term in prison for participation in the Quit India Movement. He was banned from joining government colleges during the British Rule. So, he joined Kala Bhavan of Shantiniketan to study art, which proved to be the turning point of his career. He got opportunity to learn under pioneers of modern Indian art as Nandlal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij. He joined the art school in 1944 and studied for four years.

 

In 1951 he became a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda. He briefly studied in London at the Slade School of Art as a British Council scholar in 1956. Again he joined as a professor in Baroda. He had a short stint in New York as a Rockefeller Fellow in 1966. In 1980 he joined Bhavan of Shantiniketan as faculty and retired in 1989.
