K. Damodaran Biography

K. Damodaran is a celebrity chef from Tamil Nadu. Nicknamed as Damu, he is the first Indian to receive PhD in Hotel Management and Catering Technology. He is well-known for his book ‘Damu’s Home Free Style Cooking’ in English and Tamil. He started off his professional career in the mid-1970s and owns more than 4 decades of experience in this field. He has also worked as a teacher in this field since 1986. On December 22, 2010 he set the record by cooking 617 dishes (190 kg of food) in 24 hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds, and thus entered in Guinness World Record for ‘Longest Cooking Marathon — Individual’. He cooked both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes at Savera hotel for the show which earned him acclaim. He is regular in TV shows too.

 

He completed his Diploma in Hotel management and Catering Technology from Institute of Hotel Management- Taramani, Chennai. Soon after his diploma course, he started his professional career in Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation as Management Trainee in 1975. Later he took B.Com from Annamalai University, MBA from Madras University, the CHE and CHA from the EI of the “American Hotel and Motel Association” and Conference Center Management from “Cornell University”. After that he started his career as a cooking teacher in 1986.

 

In his long professional career he served as the head of Asan Institute of Hotel Management, MGR Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. Currently he is associated with Empee Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. He authored the culinary book, ‘Damu’s Home Free Style Cooking’ in English and Tamil and rose to fame very soon. He is a familiar face to small screen audience through his cookery shows too. He is best known as Chef Damu among his admirers. He authored 20 cookbooks including Damodaran's Food Production Theory for Hotel Management students. The book was later introduced to all Hotel Management colleges and Institutes in India.
