K. D. Singh (politician) Biography

Dr. Kanwar Deep Singh, shortly called K. D. Singh is an Indian politician and successful businessman. He currently serves as a member of Rajya Sabha. A patron of sports, especially hockey, he currently serves as the president of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and the Hockey Association of Haryana. A man of controversies, his name has been involved in a few allegations like Ponzi scam exposed in 2013, Cash-for-vote, Narada sting operation etc.

 

Kanwar Deep Singh was born on 21 August 1961 in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab. A businessman turned politician and administrator; he started his wire mesh and link fencing business in 1988. The group later grew to Alchemist group in 2004, an Indian conglomerate which has presence in multiple sectors such healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food-processing, real estate, infrastructure and tea estates. He stepped down from his position as Chairman of the group in 2012 to completely dedicate himself to social service and politics. Currently he serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Alchemist Group. He also owns majority stake in Anant Media Private Limited.

 

He was a member of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha during his initial days in politics, and he was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the party in 2010. Very soon he switched to All India Trinamool Congress. There were rumours that he paid for his Rajya Sabha seat. It was alleged that he gave 80 lakh rupees to Matthew Samuel for the Narada sting operation which video-taped several high profile politicians. In 2009 following an IT raid at his business premises of Alchemist Group across India discovered an unaccounted income of Rs.22 crores.
