K. C. Joseph Biography

K. C. Joseph is a veteran politician from Kerala, associated with Indian National Congress. A seven-time MLA to Kerala State Assembly, he became Minister for Rural Development, Planning & Culture of the Government of Kerala after he won state assembly elections in 2011 for the sixth time. He was a member of Oommen Chandy’s cabinet. Prior to this, he has been consecutively elected to KLA 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996 and 2001. In 2016 state assembly elections he got consecutively elected for the seventh time representing Irikkur constituency of Kannur district. One of the representatives of Malabar Migrants, he is one of the eminent politicians of state politics associated with Indian National Congress.

He was born at Poovam, Kottayam on 3 June 1946 into a Christian family. K. M. Chacko and Thresiamma Chacko are his parents. After completing post-graduation, he also took a Bachelor in Law before he entered politics. He is also known as a social worker and a prominent leader too. He entered Politics through All Kerala Balajana Sakhyam and KSU, as a student leader and later moved to positions such as General Secretary of All Kerala Balajana Sakhyam; President, KSU Kottayam District Committee; Vice President, KSU State Committee; Secretary, Kerala University Union; General Secretary, National Council of National Students Union of India etc.

He is a former member of Kerala University Syndicate and Executive Committee of Kerala Agricultural University apart from Convener, Standing Committee of Syndicate on Finance. He also had a stint in journalism and served as the Managing Editor of "Socialist Youth" Weekly. He contested in state assembly elections for the first time in 1982. After that he has been successively elected to state assembly for 6 times. He became a state minister for the first time in 2011, where he served a term of 5 years.
