K. B. Koliwad Biography

K. B. Koliwad is a veteran Indian politician from the state of Karnataka who served as a member of Karnataka legislative assembly 5 times. He was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in the previous Congress government, during 2016 – 19 May 2018. Koliwad was the 20th speaker of the lower house. Koliwad succeeds Kagodu Thimmappa, who has been inducted into the Ministry as Revenue Minister by Chief Minister Siddaramaih. He is a senior member of the Indian National Congress from the state of Karnataka, and represented Ranibennur constituency in Haveri district of Karnataka in the previous assembly elections.

 

Krishnappa Bhimappa Koliwad was born on 1 November 1944 in Gudgur, Ranebennur, Kingdom of Mysore. Koliwad is married to Prabhavati, and has 5 children. Koliwad is a five-time MLA from Ranebennur constituency, his hometown. He got elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1972. He beat B. C. Patil of the Indian National Congress (Organisation) to win his first elections. Since then he has registered 4 more times from the same constituency. In 1985 he won by a narrow margin of 700 seats. He retained the seat in 1989 winning over Janata Dal. However he lost it by about 25,000 votes to Karjagi Veerappa Sannatammappa in 1994 state assembly elections.

 

He retained the seat in 1999 elections, and lost the same in 2004 and 2008, both times to Tilavalli Shivanna Gurappa belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He registered his win after a long time in 2013 elections and also became the speaker of Karnataka government. He is a member of the Pradesh election committee in the Karnataka Indian National Congress.
