K. Ananda Rau Biography

K. Ananda Rau was a famous Indian mathematician, and a contemporary of Ramanujan. Rau taught several well-known mathematicians, including S Chandrasekhar, M V Subbarao, C S Venkitaraman, K. S. Chandrasekharan etc and is best known for his contribution on "Summability" and convergence properties of infinite series aside Hardy and many more works. He has faced a lot of personal tragedies in his life. He lost his wife 1928 and a daughter in 1940. He also suffered various disabilities, including blindness in one eye, in his later years.

 

Ananda Rau was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, British India on September 21, 1893. His school and college days were spent in Chennai, where he completed his graduation. After doing his graduation from Presidency College of the University of Madras, he sailed to England in 1914 for advanced studies. He was a brilliant student in academics, which helped him to move to England for further studies. Ramanujan moved to England just a few months before Rau, and both earned world fame as mathematicians from India over the years to come.

 

He completed his Mathematical Tripos from King's College, Cambridge, in 1916. His initial research works were conducted under the guidance of world famous mathematician G. H. Hardy. He was a good friend of Ramanujan while at Cambridge, where they completed studies together. Ramanujan's friend R. Ramachandra Rao was his relative, which brought them near.

 

Ananda Rau returned to India in 1919, where he started his professional career as a teacher. He was appointed as a professor of mathematics at Presidency College at the age of 26 soon after his return to India. He later became the Principal of the college and retired from government service in 1948.
