Jyoti Prasad Agarwala Biography

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, popularly known as Rupkonwar was a noted Assamese playwright, lyricist, Music composer, poet, writer and film maker. He is regarded as a cultural icon of Assam. He is regarded as the founder of Assamese cinema for the first film being Joymati (1935). While film makers tried to bring on screen mythological stories, through the debut movie Jyoti chose nationalistic subject. His death anniversary is celebrated as Silpi divas in Assam. He has also participated in freedom struggle movement during college days.

 

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born on 17 June 1903 in an Agrawal family in Assam. His parents are Paramananda Agarwala and Kiranmoyee Agarwala and noted artist Chandra Kumar Agarwala was his uncle. He completed his school education from Bengal and Assam. After completing matriculation in 1921, he went abroad to study economics. But he returned without the completion of course. On his way back, he spent 7 months at the UFA studio in Germany and learnt film-making. It proved to be the turning point of his life. Once he returned, he participated in freedom struggle movement.

 

He established the Chitraban Studio at the Bholaguri Tea Estate and started filming the movie, Joymati in the year 1933 and finally released it two years later. This movie was based on a play by Laxminath Bezbarua. Next year he married Devajani Chaliha. In 1939, he released his second movie, Indramalati. In 1941, he again participated in Indian freedom struggle movement. Agarwala has written numerous plays as well as composed more than 300 songs written by him.

 

His published poem collections include - Jyoti Raamaayon and Luitor Paaror Agnixur. His plays include - Sonit Kunwori, Karengar Ligiri, Rupalim, Nimati Konya, Sonpakhilee, Khanikar, Kanaklata, Sundarknowar and Lobhita. He died of cancer on 17 January 1951 at Tezpur.
