Jugal Kishore Birla Biography

Jugal Kishore Birla was a member of prestigious business family – Birla. He was the eldest son of Baldeo Das Birla born in the year 1883. He was a noted businessman, industrialist, philanthropist and supporter of Hindu philosophy. Padma Vibhushan recipient Ghanshyam Das Birla is his younger brother. He started his business career at an early age joining his father and was involved in the trade of diverse products like opium, silver and spices. He started his business life in Kolkata. But later he shifted to Birla House at Delhi, where he lived till his death.

 

He has founded several temples in India, belonging to Varanasi, Mathura, Delhi, Kolkata etc. Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple, Delhi founded in 1939, Krishna Janmabhoomi Kesava Deo Temple at Mathura in 1951, Birla Temple, Kurukshetra founded in 1950 and North Delhi Hanuman Temple founded in 1965 are among those famous temples started by Birla. He has also donated funds for the building of Vivekananda Rock Memorial.

 

Birla started his business journey at Kolkata with trades of opium, silver, spice. The family firm, earlier known as Baldeodas Jugalkishore was renamed as Birla Brothers Limited in the year 1918. During World War Second, Birla family started business of jute and cotton and very soon, his younger brother Ghanshyam Das Birla also joined family business. He suffered heavy losses at the early stages of business and decided to sell the mill to Andrew Yule group. But his elder brother Kishore supported him in the revival of the business and titled Birla Jute, now the flagship company of Aditya Birla Group. Birla has also donated monetary funds to Hindu organizations of India like Hindu Mahasabha, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh etc.
