Joy Goswami Biography

Joy Goswami is a popular poet belonging to Bengali literature. He is one of the most important Bengali poets of modern generation post Indian independence. Most of his works are published in 1970s, 1980s and afterwards. He is a recipient of multiple honours for his literary career. In 2000 he received Sahitya Academy Award. He is also a recipient of Ananda Purashkar (1990), Anita-Sunil Basu Award, Bharatiya Bhasa Parisad (2010), Rachana Samagra Purashkar (2011), Banga bhibusan (2012) given by Government of West Bengal and many more honours. Goswami is considered as one of the leading poets and intellectuals in this current generation. Though popular as a poet, he has also authored some novels.

Joy was born on November 10, 1954 in Kolkata, West Bengal. During his early childhood his family permanently shifted to Ranaghat. His father was a political worker who was interested in poetry. Young Joy was introduced to the literal world and poetry by his father, who also encouraged him to write poems at a very young age. However his father died when he was very young and he was later brought up by his mother. His mother passed away when he was thirty.

While doing higher secondary education he started writing poems, and he couldn’t continue his studies after that. He wrote in less known magazines and periodicals during his early days of literal career. He got opportunity to publish his poems in Desh Patrika, which gave him a major breakthrough and critical acclaim. He published his first poetry collection - Christmas o Sheeter Sonnetguchchho. Jara Brishtite, Mrito Nagorir Raja, Santansantati, Moutat Maheswar, Sakalbelar Kobi, Bhijechhilo and Bhaloti Basibo are among his major works. Phulgachhe Ki Dhulo (2011) and Atmiyoswajan (2011) are among his recent published works. Pagali tomara sange earned him the prestigious Sahitya Academy award in 2000.
