Johnpaul George Biography

Johnpaul George is a critically acclaimed young director associated with Malayalam cinema, who shot to fame with his debut film, Guppy released in 2016. The movie opened to critical acclaim, and won multiple film awards at various award functions. He also writes scripts for his films, and has worked as an assistant director under Rajesh Pillai and associate director for Sameer Thahir, before he began his new journey as an independent filmmaker in Malayalam cinema. His second release, Ambili starring Soubin Shahir and Tanvi Ram is currently in production stage and expected to release in 2018.

Johnpaul George hails from Kottayam, Kerala. K. V George and Reethamma George are his parents. He completed his graduation in Performing Arts and Vocal Music from Swathi Thirunal College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram. But after graduation, he felt that joining films could be the right decision. His mother supported him with whole heart to pursue a career in film industry. He started his film career as a chief assistant director in the Rajesh Pillai’s debut - Traffic in the year 2011. He later worked as associate director for Sameer Thahir for a series of movies and also worked as the production partner of 'E4 Entertainment' from 2013 to 2016.

In 2017, he made his first feature film titled Guppy. As a newcomer his work was praised by film critics. By that time he started his own production company 'Yopa Cinema' and co-produced Guppy as well. The movie bagged 5 state awards. He won Best Debutant Director award at South Indian International Movie (SIIMA) Award 2016. The director has roped in Soubin Shahir for his next film, Ambili, and the actor is to play titular role. The movie is shot in rural areas of Kerala.
