Jitendra Udhampuri Biography

Jitendra Udhampuri is a Sahitya Academy Award winning writer from Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, who writes in Dogri, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu languages. Udhampuri received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1981. For his overall contributions towards the field of literature, he has been honoured with fourth civilian honour Padma Shri by government of India in 2010. He is also a recipient of Senior Fellowship, Union Ministry of Culture – 2007, Robe of Honour by the Governor, Jammu and Kashmir in 1987, Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit in 1993 and Republic Day Award in 2005 by Government of Jammu and Kashmir, and many other honours.

Jitendra Udhampuri was born on 9 November 1944 in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. He was born as the eldest child to his parents. He belonged to a very poor family. He did his schooling in Udhampur and moved to Jammu, where he pursued his graduation. As his mother felt ill, he discontinued his studies and moved back to hometown to take care of younger siblings. Later he joined the Indian Army but continued his interrupted studies. He completed both graduation and Master’s, while serving in army. He also completed Doctorate in Dogri.

Jitendra Udhampuri later moved to the All India Radio as a broadcaster, where he worked for many years till his retirement as director. He published his first poem in Urdu in 1962. He later published books in Hindi, Punjabi and Dogri languages too. He published a total of 30 books in different languages. Dewan-e-Gazals, Duggar Nama, Geet Ganga, Thehra Hua Kothra, Chan-ni, De Do Ek basant, Ek Shehar Yadeen Da, Banjara, Basti-Basti, Dil Dariya Khali-Khali, Phool Udaas Hain, Woh Ek din, Dil Hoya Darvesh, Kish Kalian Tere naa, Jitto, Judayian, Pinday di Barat etc are his published works.
