Jiban Ghoshal Biography

Jiban Ghoshal was an Indian independence activist and freedom fighter who lost his life at a very young age for the cause of mother nation. He was a close associative of Surya Sen, best associated with the Chittagong armoury raid in 1930, and Jiban was a member of the raid too, who got caught by British police later and killed. He was only 18 when he was killed in a fire shoot. He lived during the period, 26 June, 1912 - 1 September, 1930.

 

Jiban Ghoshal also known as Makhanlal was born in Sadarghat, Chittagong, in British India. He was born on 26 June, 1912. He got into freedom struggle movement during his academic years, and lost his life at a very young age of only 18. He became a revolutionary and a close associative of Surya Sen. He participated in police armoury raid at Chattagram and then fled to Kolkata with a friend, where he took shelter. He also faced a police encounter with his colleagues and narrowly escaped. He later took shelter in Hoogly and many other places.

 

As instructed by leaders of the Chhatri Sangha, Suhasini Ganguly and Sashadhar Acharya disguised as a marriage couple gave refuge to a few revolutionaries involved with the Chittagong armoury raid. Jiban Ghoshal, Ananta Singh, Lokenath Bal and Ananda Gupta were among the revolutionaries who took shelter at Chandannagar. However in a British raid conducted on 1 September 1930, a skirmish resulting in gunshot and Jiban Ghoshal got killed. Others including Ganguly were captured, but released very soon. Charles Tegart was the police commissioner who conducted the raid. Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey was based on Chittagong armoury raid and his role was played on screen by Simth Seth.
