Jency Anthony Biography

Jency Anthony is a playback singer mostly associated with Ilayaraaja’s Tamil compositions. She was active in the industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was introduced to the Tamil movie industry by Illayaraja. The song was Vaanathu Poonkili belonging to the movie Thiripurasundari.  The solo son Adi Penney of Mullum Malarum and Ennuyir Neethaane of Priya, aside Yesudas are among her most noticed songs. Later she faded from screen completely. However identifying her talent, Srikanth Deva gave her a break in 2010 through one of his compositions. It was following an interview he read in a magazine.  Thus she recorded a song after many years and it’s surprising that her voice quality was not faded even after years.

Jency is of Kerala origin and belongs to a musical family. She started formal training in Carnatic music at a younger age. She is married to a businessman and settled with life. The couple has two children. Vaanathu Poonkili of movie Thiripurasundari was her break to playback singing and later she regularly sang with the legendary music composer Illayaraja. A. R. Rahman has worked as a keyboard player under this music maestro while Jency was active in playback singing.

Ekanthathe ninte dweepil from 1982 padmarajan film novemberinte nashtam, pictured on Madhavi is one of her Malayalam memorable songs. Though she owned a beautiful voice, she didn’t get much opportunity from her mother tongue. Most of her memorable songs belongs to Illayaraja’s Tamil compositions. Envanine Poy Vennilla pictured on Rajnikanth and Sridevi is one such golden song in the early 1980s. Jency has been an acclaimed singer of 80s and was at the peak of her career during 1978-1985 and later disappeared completely from scene post marriage.
