Jayshree Gadkar Biography

Jayshree Gadkar was a noted actress of Hindi and Marathi film and theatre industry who worked as both child artist and adult actress. She has done both leading and supporting roles. Born in a Konkani speaking family at Kanasgiri on 21 February 1942, she entered film industry as a child artist in the black and white era of Indian cinema and later moved to adult roles. She worked for 4 decades including 1940’s and 1980’s. In this career spanning to 4 decades, she appeared in more than 250 movies. She is a noted theatre artist too. As a director, she has directed two Marathi movies - Saasar Maher and Ashi Asavi Saasu. She was married to noted theater artist, Bal Dhuri and television audience is familiar with their appearance as couple, Dasarath and Kausalya in Doordarshan epic serial, Ramayana directed by Ramanand sagar.

Jayshree was born on 21 February 1942 in a Konkani-speaking family at Kanasgiri, Karnataka. She was married to the well noted theatre artist, Bal Dhuri. She entered the world of cinema as a child artist. She entered as tamasha dancer (a traditional art form of singing and dancing from Maharastra) for movies when she was a child. Later she appeared as a group dancer in V. Shantaram's Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje in 1955. It was her first adult role.

Later she got a bit role for the Marathi movie, "Disat Tasa Nasat" opposite Raja Gosavi. The movie was directed by noted director Dinkar D Patil. Her next noted role was Sangtye Aika, where she played lead role. It was just the beginning and success of Sangtye Aika gave her more opportunities and she became one of the leading ladies of the time. A few of her early roles include - Chandoba Chandoba Bhaaglas Ka, Ghat Padli Thaka Thaka, Thamb Laxmi Kunku Lawate, Baap Majha Brahmachari and Saranga.
