Jayateerth Mevundi hails from the land of leading vocalists like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Gangubai Hangal. Jayateerth received his initial training in music from Pt. Arjunsa Nakod of Gwalior Gharana for about 10 years. Since 1994, he is trained by Pt. Shripati Padegar – a disciple of great Bhimsen Joshi of Kirana Gharana. He won Second prize in "AIR" Hindustani Classical vocal competition during 1988-89, which was one of his earliest recognitions as a talented vocalist.

His first major recital was at the age of 21 at Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsava in Pune. He was working as a tanpura player with All India Radio when he received a call from none other than Pt. Bhimsen Joshi who invited him to perform in the music festival. In the given 40 minute slot, he performed Raaga Yaman. The audience was so impressed that he had to sing one more composition in Raaga Bahar. Then came a request for Kannada bhajan and thus started the magical journey of this renowned singer in national level.
