Jayanto Nath Chaudhuri Biography

Jayanto Nath Chaudhuri was an officer associated with Indian Army. A 4-star general who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 1962 to 1966, he served as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada from 1966 to 1969, soon after his retirement from Indian Army. Military Governor of Hyderabad State from 1948 to 1949 is yet another high end administrative post held by Chaudhuri during his service with Indian Army. For his outstanding contributions to the field of Civil Service, government of India honoured him with country’s second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 1965. He lived during the period 10 June 1908 – 6 April 1983.

 

Jayanto Nath Chaudhuri hailed from Haripur, Bengal. He belonged to a very influential Zamindar family, with many of its family members associated with literature and public affairs. There were so many lawyers from the family, and high prolific writers too. His maternal grandfather Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee served as the first president of the Indian National Congress. Noted writer Pramatha Chaudhuri was his uncle. Pramatha was married to the niece of Rabindranath Tagore. Thus Jayanto is a relative to the illustrious Tagore family of Bengal. Most of his uncles were distinguished figures by their own right.

 

Jayanto Nath Chaudhuri’s education was completed at Kolkata, before he joined Indian army. He was commissioned from Sandhurst as a second lieutenant onto the Unattached List in the year 1928 in British Indian Army. Started his career during British rule, he continued with his service after Indian independence. He was appointed Director of Military Operations & Intelligence at Army Headquarters in New Delhi in 1947. He retired on 7 June 1966, after completing 38 years of military service, and government of India honoured his efforts with Padma Vibhushan.
