Jayanta Talukdar Biography

Jayanta Talukdar is an Indian sportsman practicing the game of archery. He represented India in the 2012 London Olympics.

 

He was born on 2nd March 1986 in Guwahati in Assam. His father’s name is Ranjan Talukdar. He has one brother named Nikhilesh Talukdar. He is the youngest son of a quarry owner and he was spotted in a Talent Hunt Trial in Guwahati in 2000. Until then, he was not aware of that sport. He attended the camp at the Tata Archery Academy at Jamshedpur and finished first among 50 kids.

 

He was soon placed in the Junior National Academy team of India and in 2005, to the surprise of everyone he won in the 25th Senior National Archery Championship held at Ernakulam and got the title of Senior National Champion in Recurve Individual event of Archery. He also won the Senior National title in 2006 in the event held at Kolkata.

 

His international career started with his participation in the Asian Championship 2003 held at Yangon. He ended up with silver in that event. Again he won silver medal in the Asian Championship 2005 held at New Delhi in the team event but lost in the quarter finals in the individual event.

 

He participated in the 2004 Junior World Archery Championship held at Britain and got silver medal in the team event and turned out to be the highest scorer in the national team. He was instrumental in India getting its first ever medal in the world championship in archery. He also took part in the Sydney Olympic Games 2004 and got his silver medal at the World Championship 2005 held at Madrid. He was hailed as the best Indian performer in that tournament.

 

He won gold medal at the SAF Games held at Colombo in Sri Lanka. He also grabbed the gold at the FITA Meteksan Archery World Cup tournament held at Porec in Croatia which is considered to be a feather in the crown of his career. He received the prestigious Arjuna Award from the government of India in 2007 for his excellence in the game of archery.
