Jayabharathi Biography

Jaya Bharathi was one among the three leading ladies of Malayalam movies during 70’s. Though she was junior to Sheela and Jaya Bharathi, with her acting skills she was able to find a place among Malayalam audience.

She started her film career during second half of 60’s. Penmakkal was her first movie. This movie was released in the year 1966. In the following year, three films of Jaya Bharathi were released. Kadeeja, Kaanatha Visheshangal and Naadan pennu are those three movies. When she joined the industry, two queens were reining the industry – Sarala, who was famous for her acting skills and Sheela, who had a lot of fan followers. Yet Jaya Bharathi got opportunity to work with almost all leading actors of the industry. As hero, Prem Nazzir was casted most. She has also worked with Madhu, Sathyan, Jayan, Vincent, Soman and many more.

She is most remembered as a village girl or house hold lady and her songs were beautifully pictured that time. She was naturally beautiful and resembled a neighbourhood girl a lot. She was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Yet she worked most for Malayalam movies. She was married to Sathar, villain of Malayalam movies. But unfortunately they separated. Unnikrishnan is the child born in this wed lock and now Jaya Bharathi is busy with her school of arts. She is a trained dancer as well.

She has won Kerala state awards twice, in consecutive years 1972 and 1973. In 1972, she was awarded best actress for overall performance in the year while next year, she got it for her wonderful performance in Madhavi kutty. She got special jury awards for Marupakkam. Now let me briefly mention a few of her hit movies. She is popularly known as ‘Rathi Chechi’ for the role played by a middle aged woman who fall in love with a boy of teens, in Bharathan directed ‘Rathi Nirvetham’. A few remarkable films of Jaya Bharathi’s career include Babu mon, Ayal kari, Ayalathe Sundari, Oru Penninte Kadha, Jesus, Kaalachakream, Kadal Paalam, Astamayam, Jnan Jnan mathram, CID Nazir, Guruvayur Kesavan, Karakaana kadal and Padmatheertham.

In the middle 80’s she turned to character roles. In the movie ‘Idanazhiyiloru Kaalocha’, she played the role of Vineeth’s mother – a dancer, who gets separated from her husband Soman.
