Jatindramohan Bagchi Biography

Jatindramohan Bagchi was a poet and journalist from Bengal. He has published many poetry collections and one literary criticism work titled - Rabindranath O Yugasahitya. Lekha (1906), Rekha (1910), Aparajita (1915), Bandhur Dan (1918), Jagarani (1922), Niharika (1927) and Mahabharati (1936) are his published anthologies of poems. Rabindranath Tagore was his contemporary poet and many of his works showed influences of Tagore. He is one of the major Bengali poets post Tagore period. He expressed Bengal rural life, their sorrows, happiness and emotions through his works. He has been associated with the cultural journals – Manasi, Purvachal and Jamuna as an editor.


Jatindramohan Bagchi was born on 27 November 1878 in Nadia, West Bengal. He was the son of Harimohan, a resident of Balagar, Hughli. He passed the Entrance exam in 1896 and FA in 1898. He studied at Scottish Church College, Kolkata then known by the name - Duff College. He completed Bachelor of Arts in 1902. Later he did many jobs like secretary to Justice Saradacharan Mitra, License Collector of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and manager of FN Gupta Company etc. Yet he gained public attention as a poet and was a prolific editor too. He contributed to a number of literary journals as well.


Kajladidi, Dasiputro, Shopno Desh, Diprohore, Hafizer Proshno, Aporajita, Ondho Badhu, Kalonko, Joubon Chanchollyo, Sadhona, NagKeshor, Keya Ful, Kormo, Madhobika and Andha Badhu are his popular poems. He portrayed the natural beauty of Bangladesh through his poems. He became the owner of Purvachal during Indian independence period and passed away in 1948.
