Jatindra Nath Das Biography

Jatindra Nath Das was an Indian independence activist and revolutionary who participated in Indian freedom struggle movement. He was a native of Kolkata, West Bengal. On 14 June 1929 he was arrested for revolutionary activities and Lahore Conspiracy Case and was imprisoned in Lahore jail. He conducted a hunger strike at Lahore Prison which continued for long 63 days and Das lost his life at a very young age of only 24. He died on 13 September 1929.

 

Jatindra Nath Das was born in Kolkata on 27 October 1904. At a very young age he got attracted to freedom struggle movement and also participated in Gandhi's Non-Cooperation movement in 1921. He got involved with the revolutionary group of Bengal - Anushilan Samiti during his teens. He got arrested and imprisoned at the Mymensingh Central Jail in November 1925 while he was doing his graduation at Vidyasagar College. To protest against the ill treatment and tortures given to the fellow prisoners at jail he went on to a hunger strike. The fast lasted for 20 days and ended when Jail Superintendent apologized.

 

Das continued with his revolutionary activities and became an associative of Bhagat Singh. He also learnt how to make bombs. Following the Lahore Conspiracy Case he got arrested on 14 June 1929. He along with his fellow Indian prisoners went on to a hunger strike in prison demanding equal treatments to both Indian and European prisoners. The living condition of Indian prisoners was worse and less hygienic which prompted Das to start a hunger strike.  

 

He started hunger strike on 15 June 1929 which lasted 63 days. Though the jail authority tried to feed him forcibly they couldn’t succeed. He died in prison on September 13, 1929, and his death procession was led by Durga Bhabhi. Bhagat Singh continued with his hunger strike while five others gave up their hunger strike the same day. When Bollywood film The Legend of Bhagat Singh was made in 2002, his role was played by Amitabh Bhattacharjee.
