Jatindra Mohan Sengupta Biography

Jatindra Mohan Sengupta was an Indian revolutionary who fought against British rule in India. He was a practising lawyer and politician. He has been arrested several times by British and died while at Ranchi prison and he was only 48 then. English woman Edith Ellen Gray, who later came to be known for her struggles for Indian independence, was his wife. They fell in love and got married and she later changed her name to Nellie Sengupta.

Jatindra Mohan Sengupta was born on 22 February 1885 in a prominent zamindar family of Chittagong district, now a part of Bangladesh. His father was an advocate and a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. Jatindra Mohan passed Entrance examination in 1902 from Hare School of Kolkata and later studied at Presidency College, Kolkata. He went abroad and completed Law. It was during his stay in England, he met Edith Ellen Gray for the first time. They got married and he returned to India along with her. He joined Indian politics and started law practising as well. After one year he joined the Calcutta High Court bar. He also worked as Professor in Ripon Law College, Kolkata for some time. Gradually he earned good reputation as a qualified lawyer.

He joined Non-Cooperation Movement and gave up his profession to fully concentrate in Indian freedom struggle. In 1911, he joined Indian National Congress and in 1921 became the Chairman of the Bengal Reception Committees of the Indian National Congress. His wife also joined freedom struggle movement and got arrested. In 1925, he was elected president of the Bengal Swaraj Party. He has also served many positions in Bengal politics. In January 1932, he was arrested and detained in Poona. While he was transferred to Ranchi, his death deteriorated resulting in his death.
