Jatin Kanakia Biography

Jatin Kanakia was a popular television actor of Doordarshan. He died in 1999 at a comparatively younger age of 46. Known as a comedian, he has also appeared in a few Bollywood movies like Hum saath saath hain and was an active member of Gujarati theatre. He was informally called, Prince of comedy. Jatin was born in June 28, 1953 and he died from pancreatic cancer, after a brief period of hospitalization in 1999, while he was at the peak of his career. He was honoured with a posthumous award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2001 for his contribution to Indian television.

 

Jatin was born in a Gujarati Hindu family. Later he moved with his family to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting. He has worked both as an actor and playwright for Hindi and Gujarati languages, during the first phase of his career. Jatin Kanakia's first big break was in the comedy series of Doordarshan National Channel, Shrimaan Shrimati (1989). It was one of the top rated comedy serials during early 1990’s. He played the lead role of Keshav Kulkurna, middle-class house-holder who develops a crush on his movie star neighbour. The serial plotted with comedy elements was well received by viewers and Jatin became a household name. Reema Lagoo played his wife’s role and Rakesh Bedi and Archana Puran Singh played neighbour couple’s role. The whole story revolved around these four characters. All The Best was another popular sitcom telecasted in Doordarshan during middle 1990’s.

 

Other television serials of Jatin include - Baat Ek Raaz Ki, Tajas, Hum paanch, Maal Hai To Taal Hai, Zara Hatke, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh, Mrs. Madhuri Dikshit, Hum Sab Ek Hain, Hum Apke Hai Woh, Hum Sab Ek Hain, Agori, Yes Boss, Do Aur Do Paanch and Padosan. He has appeared in Bollywood movies like Hum saat saat hai, Khoobsurat and Vishwavidhaata, just before his death happened in 1999. He was busy in his work even while critically ill.
