Jaswant Singh Neki Biography

Jaswant Singh Neki was a major poet and scholar among the third generation of modern Punjabi writers. A psychiatrist of international repute, he has formerly served as Head of the Psychiatry Department at AIIMS, Delhi. Neki has contributed to Punjabi literature in the form of poetry apart from his works on Sikhism. His autobiographical poem Simriti De Kiran Ton Pehlan (1975) is his magnum opus and regarded as a masterpiece of Indian literature. Neki is best remembered for his poetry collections, Asle to Ohle Tak(1955) and autobiographical work, Koi Naon Na Jane Mera (2000). In 1979 he won Punjabi Sahitya Academy award for the work - Karuna Di Chuh Ton Magron.

 

Neki was born on 27 August 1925 in Murid, Jhelum district, Punjab. His family moved to Quetta in Baluchistan of present-day Pakistan when he was quite young. He had an excellent academic record and enjoyed two merit scholarships for his medical studies. After partition, he left Lahore and settled in Amritsar. After graduation from Government Medical College, Amritsar in 1949, his professional career started in the same college itself. He also worked as a faculty there. He also completed Master’s in Psychology and as a psychiatrist he rose to many ranks and finally became Head of the Psychiatry Department at AIIMS, Delhi.

 

Known for his contributions as a metaphysical poet in Punjabi language, Sahitya Akademi Award, Asan Memorial Award, Shiromani Sahitkar Award and Sarvotam Sahitkar Award are the major honours received by him. He contributed to prose and poetry sections. As a very religious person he was known for his liberal views also. He has served as a member of the Dharam Prachar Committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee. He passed away on 11 September 2015 aged 90.
