Jaswant Singh Kanwal Biography

Jaswant Singh Kanwal is a popular writer belonging to Punjabi language. Established as a prominent novelist, short story writer and essayist, he was awarded the Punjabi Sahit Shiromani Award in 2007. Lahoo Di Lo - based on the Naxalite movement in Punjab is his best known work, though it invited controversies at a time when Naxal movement was banned in India. He published the book in Singapore and smuggled the copies to India during the Emergency period of 1970s. The book was later published in Punjab and translated to English also. His novel Taushali Di Hanso received the Sahitya Academy award in 1998. His 1996 book Pakhi earned him a Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.

 

Kanwal was born in the village of Dhudike of Moga district in Punjab. He moved to Malaya during his teens and it was there that he first got interested in literature. Later he returned back to his native village and continued with his literal works. As a writer, he is best known for writing on the rural life of Punjab vividly. He also wrote against social evils that existed in society then and advocated for gender equality. Slowly his works got leaned towards leftist ideas and he authored the book Lahoo Di Lo – which couldn’t get a publisher in India. The book published in Singapore in the 1970s, got published in India only after Emergency was lifted.

 

Some of his noted works include - Punjabio Marna Hai Ke Jina, Khoon Ke Sohile Gavee-aih Nanak, Mukati Maarag, Taushali di hanso, Haani, Roop Dhaara, Aaradhana, Jeevan Kahanian, Lamme Walan Di Peer, Gora Mukh Sajna Da, Pali, Rooh Da Haan, Devdas, Ainion Chon Utho Surma, Juhu Da Moti, Soormain and many more.  Kanwal was conferred upon the degree of Doctor of Literature by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 2008.
