Jaspinder Narula Biography

Jaspinder Narula is a versatile Punjabi singer who has sung a few hit songs for Hindi movies also. Her Bollywood fans remember her for the song ‘Pyar to hona hi tha’ sung along with Remo Fernandes for the movie ‘Pyar to hona hi tha’, music given by Jatin Lalit. The movie was released just a few days before the marriage of Ajay Devgan and Kajol and Jaspinder Narula was pictured in the music video too. This song gave her the first Filmfare awards in the female singing category. Other hit songs of Jaspinder Narula are Nayyo nayyo (tere rang balle balle) of Abbas Masthan thriller ‘Soldier’ pictured on Preeti Zinta and Bobby Deol and ‘Bumbro bumro shyam rang bumro’ of Mission Kashmir, again pictured on Preeti Zinta. She also sings religious music as well as Punjabi and she is trained in Sufi music too. She is also known to be a popular Sikh religious singer and Gurbani. She has won ‘Dhoom Machale’ program of ND TV Imagine in the year 2008. She has done Ph.D in Hindustani classical music from Delhi University.

Jaspinder was born as the daughter of Kesar Singh Narula, a music composer of 1950s. She started her singing career at an younger age and at first she was interested in sufiana music and religious bhajans. When music director of Bollywood Kalyanji noticed her talent, he advised her to go to Mumbai. He even recommended her to his son music composer Viju Shah who gave her Bollywood break through his movies – Master, Din tak din of Bade miya chote miya and Aar ya paar. But it was the title track of Pyar to hona hi tha that made her popular in Bollywood. She won star screen awards for playback singing also, for the same song.

Other Bollywood songs of Jaspinder Narula include Soni soni of Monabbetein, sung along with a group of singers, I am the best (female version for Juhi Chawla) of the movie ‘Phir phi dil hai Hindusthani’ and ‘Nach baliye’ and title track of super hit movie ‘Bunti aur Babli’. Now she lives in Mumbai along with her husband, Man Mohan, Canada-based Indian businessman.
