Jaspal Bhatti Biography

Jaspal Bhatti was a very popular television celebrity of Doordarshan. He was known for satirical take on the problems of the common man. His shows – Ulta Pulta and Flop show, aired on Doordarshan during late 80’s and early 90’s placed him as one of the top celebrated personalities of Indian television. His comic shows are really worth to watch once. This great actor/comedian died in a car accident near Shahkot in Nakodar on 25 October 2012, aged 57. Vivek Shauq, a comedian of Indian screen has been a part of all his television shows and he died one year before the unfortunate death of Bhatti; that too an unexpected demise due to a heart attack. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan (posthumously) in the year 2013. He is always regarded as one of the great entertainers of Indian crowd. Many of the satire and comic shows later shown on Indian television have been inspired from the popular shows of Bhatti.

 

Jaspal Bhatti was born on 3 March 1955 at Amritsar. He completed electrical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. During college days, he was active in street plays. A street play, ‘Nonsense Club’ was quite popular in those days. He was a cartoonist for the ‘The Tribune’ newspaper in Chandigarh before entering Indian television. He is still remembered among his fans for his low budget television show, Flop Show. Ulta pulta, Full tension, Thank you Jijaji and Hye Zindagi Bye Zindagi are other noted serials of Bhatti. He has appeared in numerous movies as well.

 

He appeared in Bollywood movies like - Jaanam Samjha Karo, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe, Shakthi: the power, Tujhe Meri Kasam, Kuch na kaho, Kartoos, Aa ab laut chalein, Nalayak Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye, Fanaa, Hum Tum Shabana, Mausam and Khauff. Bhatti was known for floating his political parties during elections to bring in front the problems faced by public. 'Hawala Party', Suitcase Party and Recession Party are a few such satire floats. Satire was his masterpiece and it was well reflected in all his works. He was given Lifetime Achievement Award, at the first Golden Kela Awards.
