Jasodhara Bagchi Biography

Jasodhara Bagchi is a well-known feminist critic, writer and activist from Bengal. Bagchi is Emeritus Professor of Women's Studies at Jadavpur University, where she worked as English professor till retirement. She is married to noted Indian economist and writer, Amiya Kumar Bagchi. She is the Founder-Director of the School of Women's Studies at Jadavpur University, the wing she started in 1988. She is known for the initiation of Bengali Women Writers Reprint Series and one of the pioneers associated with it. Its aim is to nourish young woman writers. She is former Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women and her research works include women’s studies and writings.

 

Her works are strongly rooted in feminist ideologies. She edits books apart from authoring. A few of them include – ‘Loved and Unloved: The Girl Child in the Family’, ‘The Changing Status of Women in West Bengal 1970-2000: The Challenges Ahead’, ‘Thinking Social Science in India: Essays in Honour of Alice Thorner’, ‘Literature, Society, and Ideology in the Victorian Era’ and ‘Indian Women: Myth and Reality’. Apart from women related subjects, the other themes she deals with include - 19th century English and Bengali literature, Partition of India and the reception of Positivism in Bengal.

 

She was born in 1937 in Kolkata and she completed her education from prestigious Presidency College, university of Calcutta. After studies, she started her career as a faculty and served most of her working years at Jadavpur University. She has been an English professor till her retirement from the university. She is the former Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women.
