Jarbom Gamlin Biography

Jarbom Gamlin was an influential Indian politician who has served as the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He was associated with Indian National Congress and served as 7th CM of Arunachal Pradesh during 5 May 2011 – 31 October 2011. He was the president of Arunachal Pradesh Bar Association from 1992-2001. He passed away on 30 November 2014 aged only 53. He was also a parliamentarian who got elected from Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency in the 13th Lok Sabha. He was a lawyer by profession before joining active politics.

 

Jarbom Gamlin was born on 16 April 1961 in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Sokjar Gamlin and Gamde Ete Gamlin were his parents. He schooled from a Sainik school of Assam and then graduated in History from St. Stephen's College in Delhi. He also completed his law studies from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1984, before he started practising law. Even while busy with his professional career, he had stint in politics, since his college days at Delhi. Gamlin started off as a student leader of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union, and served as its president in the early 1980s.

 

As a regional leader he rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2004 he became the home minister of Arunachal Pradesh. Following indifferences with Gegong Apang, he lost his cabinet position. But he played a key role in toppling the Apang ministry and installation of Dorjee Khandu as CM in 2007. He served as power minister of Arunachal Pradesh after being elected to legislative assembly in 2009. Following the death of Dorjee Khandu on 30 April 2011, he was given the power of CM. However his career was short lived and lasted only a few months as the government was toppled by Nabam Tuki.
