Janagaraj Biography

Janagaraj is a popular comedian of Tamil films who has appeared in supporting roles for more than 100 movies. He started his career in the late 1970’s and during 1980’s he established himself as a good actor. He appeared in popular hits of 1980s like Nayagan, Siva, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Sindhu Bhairavi, Agni Natchathiram and Rajadhi Raja. His popular movies of 1990’s include – Nethiyadi, Baasha, Veera, Maymatham, Annamalai, Roja, Anjali, Gopura Vasalile, Panakkaran and Guna. With mid-1990’s, he switched on to character roles, his most popular roles being King, Arunachalam, Jodi, M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi, New and Aayutha Ezhuthu. He played a bit role of a taxi driver in Mani Ratnam’s Dil se. His unique facial expressions and body language placed his name among the most popular comedians of Tamil cinema, all-time. He gained popularly as the sidekick of all-time popular actors, Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth throughout 1980’s and 1990’s.

He worked as Junior Division Clerk of Auditor General’s Office in the mid-1970’s before entering movies. Though he was serving a clerical post, he was active in theater activities during this time. He also worked as a part time stage actor. Since 1972, he did junior artist and minor roles in many Tamil movies of director K. Balachander. Sevuppu Villu in 1977 marked his real debut of silver screen, yet he continued during minor roles till Nizhalgal in 1980 happened to him. After that he didn’t turn back and became one of the leading comedians of the industry.

He played a memorable supporting actor role in one of the greatest Indian movies all-time, Nayakan. In this movie, he portrayed the role only next to the great actor, Kamal Hassan. Throughout his movies, he owns the ability to transform into any mode with ease and easily go on full swing with the mood of the character. With mid 2000’s, he took a break from acting career and was seen in one movie, Agarathi released in 2011.
