Jamini Roy Biography

Jamini Roy was a celebrated Indian artist and painter. He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, a great name in the field of modern Indian art. For his contributions to Indian art, he has been honored with Padma Bhushan in 1955. He has also received Viceroy's gold medal in an all India art exhibition conduced in 1934. His famous works include - St. Ann and the Blessed Virgin, Krishna with Gopis in Boat, Virgin And Child, Warrior King, Ravana, Sita and Jatayu, Krishna and Balarama, Cats Plus, Cats Sharing a Prawn, Santal Boy with Drum, Krishna with Gopis in Boat, Krishna and Radha Dancing, Seated Woman in Sari, Queen on Tiger, Makara, Vaishnavas and Crucifixion with Attendant Angels.

 

Jamini Roy was born on 11 of April 1887 in a middle class agricultural family of Beliatore of present Bangladesh. At the age of 16, he joined Government School of Art at Kolkata where he learnt to paint classical nudes and painting in oils. In 1908 he received his Diploma in Fine Art. But very soon, he was drawn towards India’s traditional sketches and ideas than westernized traditions. Living folk and tribal art became his real inspirations. He was most influenced by the Kalighat Pat style of painting. But later he was drawn towards experiments with the Santhal dance, a reaction against Bengal School and Western tradition.

 

Jamini Roy's paintings were put on exhibition for the first time in the British India Street of Kolkata in 1938. With the decade of 1940’s, Roy’s paintings became popular. Bengali middle class and the European community were the chief buyers of his paintings. In 1946, his work was exhibited in London and in 1953, in New York. Later his experiments with Kalighat Pat fully concentered on to "patua" style and went to learn from village patuas.  He preferred himself to be called a patua. Jamini Roy died in 1972.
