Jainendra Kumar Biography

Jainendra Kumar was a well-known Hindi writer who lived during the period, 2 January 1905 – 24 December 1988. He was best known as a novelist. A recipient of three National honours including Padma Bhushan in 1971, Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 1966, he authored around 2 dozens of novels, apart from a few translation works. Parakh, Sunita, Tyagapatra, Paap Aur Prakash and Muktibodh are his celebrated works. A freedom fighter, he was involved with Non-cooperation movement and discontinued his studies to support this move. He was closely associated with Munshi Premchand for many literal contributions, and formation of Hindustani Sabhaa in Lahore.

 

Jainendra Kumar was born on 2 January 1905 in Kodiyaganj, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, British India. He studied at Rishabh Bhrahmacharyashram, Hastinapur, Uttar Pradesh founded by his uncle. He left the place in 1912, and later joined Banaras Hindu University for higher education. Influenced by Non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi, he left his studies at BHU. He was also involved with freedom struggle movement, and has been associated with leaders of nationalist movement like Gandhi, Nehru etc. He started writing in the mid-1920s, and also tried his luck in business in Kolkata, then known as Calcutta. In 1930 he published his first collection of stories titled Phansi.

 

Along with Munshi Premchand, he established the Hindustani Sabhaa in Lahore. Many famous literals and their contemporaries form a part of this organization. After the death of Premchand, he became the editor of Hans. As a writer his published works include – Chidiya Ki Bhachi, Parakh, Ankita, Sukhda, Kalyani, Akal Purush Gandhi, Premchand: Ek Krati Vyaktitva, Sahitya ka Shrey Aur Prey, Samay Aur Hum, Ek Raat, Vatayan, Jeevan Sahitya Aur Paramparayein, Gandhi Aur Humara Samay Tatha Sanskriti, Khel, Pajeb, Patni, Suneeta, Neelam Desh ki Rajkanya, Jayvardhan, Dashark etc. He passed away in 1988.
