Jaggi Vasudev Biography

Jaggi Vasudev is a Hindu spiritual leader and philosopher from Mysore, Karnataka. Commonly known as Sadhguru, he has authored more than 100 books belonging to 8 languages including Tamil, Hindi, English, Kannada and Telugu. He founded Isha Foundation which gives yoga classes across the world. It is a non-religious and non-profit organisation founded in Coimbatore in the year 1992, presently run by volunteers. He also founded Project Green Hands (PGH), a grassroots ecological initiative which has received numerous National awards. Isha Foundation also includes a few initiatives like Action for Rural Rejuvenation and Isha Vidhya and runs many charity organizations.

He was born in Mysore on 3 September 1957 to Susheela and Dr. Vasudev, as the youngest of four children. His father was an ophthalmologist who worked in the Indian Railways and frequent transfers were a part of his job. He developed an interest in nature at a younger age and used to make frequent forest trips which may last for more than 3 days. He learnt simple yoga techniques from Malladihalli Sri Raghavendra Swamiji at the age of 11. He graduated from University of Mysore and even during his college days, he continued his tours to forests and hilly areas, alongside his friends.

After studies he started business of bricks, poultry etc. He had a spiritual experience at Chamundi Hill at the age of 25. He handed over his business to his friend and travelled extensively to know the real truth behind his spiritual experience he had at Chamundi hill. Then he decided to teach yoga to share his inner experience and conducted his first yoga class in Mysore in 1983. Only 7 people attended his first yoga class. But later it spread as a big banyan tree across the world.
