Jagdish Prasad Biography

Jagdish Prasad was an Indian classical vocalist of the Patiala Gharana. He hails from Kolkata, West Bengal. He was a student of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He was a Top grade All India Radio radio artist. For his contributions to Indian classical music, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1991. His son Samrat Pandit, born in 1982 follows his legacy and has earned fame in the field of Indian Hindustani music. Jagdish’s music recordings have been released as Dawning Dewdrops and Shraddhanjali (2 CDs), both in 2011.

 

He was born on 1937 in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. He was born into a family with musical background, and received initial training from his father, Badri Prasad. His father was a court musician in Raigarh princely state, before it was abolished. Jagdish Prasad was blessed to receive musical training from the great Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Though Raigarh was his hometown, Jagdish got permanently shifted to Kolkata, where he stayed the rest of his life.

 

Jagdish joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy as a musician and scholar in 1977. He also worked a lecturer at the Khairagarh University. Apart from performing in different cities of India, he has also travelled worldwide with his music concerts. His son also accompanied him in many concerts since young. Samrat Pandit is his youngest son. He launched Samrat’s career in 2001 as a teenager.

 

He had a tremendous control over melody as well as rhythm. He also performed effortlessly serious Khayal renditions as well as lighter versions of Hindustani music like thumri, tappa and dadra. He was known to be a quick wit person. He passed away in July 2011. He died after complications arising from septicemia.
