Jagdish Bhagwati Biography 
Professor Jagdish Bhagwati is an Indian Economist, who currently resides in US. His research in international trade and his advocacy of free trade make him an important person in this field. He is the youngest brother of P. N. Bhagwati, one of the finest and youngest judges the Supreme Court who was appointed as 17th Chief Justice of India at the age of only 51. Born into a Gujarati family of well-educated and prolific people, his father Justice Natwarlal H. Bhagwati served as a Supreme Court judge. Jagdish currently serves as the Professor of Economics, Law and International Affairs at Columbia University.
He was born in Mumbai on July 26, 1934 to Justice Natwarlal H. Bhagwati. He was born into a Gujarati family. After graduation from Sydenham College, Mumbai, he moved abroad where he completed his second graduation degree from St. John's College, Cambridge. He took Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961. He is married to noted Economist and professor, Padma Desai. In 1970, the couple worked together and published the work, India: Planning for Industrialization, which was a noted work at that time.
He returned to India in the year 1961 soon after his completion of his research work and taught economics at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and Delhi School of Economics before he moved to Cambridge in 1968. He worked as a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the period 1968-1980. Bhagawati served as an external advisor to the Director General of the World Trade Organization in 2001. Currently he is a Senior Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as a board member of Academic Advisory Board of Human Rights Watch (Asia). In the year 2000, he was awarded by government of India by Padma Vibhushan.
