Jagathy N. K. Achary Biography

Jagathy N. K. Achary was a popular dramatist and playwright associated with Malayalam theatre. He is the father of acclaimed comedian cum character artist of Malayalam cinema - Jagathy Sreekumar. Achary has given significant contributions to Malayalam theater post Indian independence and was most active in the era of 1960s and 1970s. He was partner of 'Kalanilayam Drama Troupe' and 'Kayamkulam Kochunni', Umminimthanka, Eleyedathu Rani and ‘Kadamattathu Kathanar' are his popular plays. He has also written many film scripts, the most notable one being Veluthampi Dalawa. He wrote several humorous essays and short stories, well appreciated by readers. He has also played brief roles in movies during 1980s, the most notable ones being Moonnam Pakkam and Desatanakkili Karayarilla. He passed away in 1997.

 

Achari was born in Jagathy of present day Thiruvananthapuram city. After graduation, he took Bachelor of Law. He started his career as a government employee, but later joined All India Radio Thiruvananthapuram. He worked as a staff assistant and later worked with different radio stations in different roles. He also wrote radio plays and humourous skits for radio during his career. He married Prasanna and the couple had 5 children.

 

He has written more than 20 plays for Malayalam Theater and scripted 22 movies as well. Most of his plays were related to cultural figures of Kerala known for their brave acts. Some of them were inspired from Vadakkan pattukal and his plays have been instrumental in popularizing those heroes. His humour works too were popular and he was a painter too. Kalliyankattu Neeli, Swimming Pool, Kottaram Vilkkanandu, Thapswini and Kodungallooramma are among his noted film scripts.
